Every Layer Off, 44 Sheets of New Decking, Dorset Lane, Penn Wynne
Under this roof's shingles was an older layer of cedar shake. We tore off every layer down to the frame, installed 44 new sheets of decking, covered it in GAF synthetic underlayment and put on a new shingle roof, dormers included. A roof that has been covered over rather than torn off hides its decking, which is why we take it all the way down.
New TPO Flat Roof with a Skylight Closed In, Centennial Road, Penn Valley
A house with large flat roof sections, where water had been sitting on the old surface. We replaced the damaged decking, closed in a skylight, and installed a new white TPO membrane across the flat roof.
GAF Timberline HDZ Roof and Rotted Decking Replaced, Winding Way, Merion Station
A stone-and-brick home whose roof sat on its original plank board decking. We tore it off, replaced the rotted and damaged decking, and installed a full GAF system: WeatherWatch leak barrier, synthetic underlayment, Pro-Start starter strip, Timberline HDZ shingles and Seal-A-Ridge ridge caps, with new step flashing and drip edge.
What We See on Lower Merion Roofs
Many Lower Merion homes are older stone, brick and clapboard houses, and their roofs often carry history underneath: a layer of cedar shake under the shingles on Dorset Lane, original plank board decking on Winding Way. Neither shows from the ground. Tearing the roof off to the deck is how we find it and fix it, rather than covering it again. Flat roofs, like the one on Centennial Road, need a membrane like TPO rather than shingles.
